Conviction is the key - Zig Ziglar

The late Mary Crowley frequently commented that one person with a conviction would do more than a hundred who only had an interest. Commitment is the key to staying the course and completing the project. Conviction always precedes commitment.

When we’re convinced as a salesperson that we are selling a marvelous product, our demeanor, body language, voice inflection, facial expressions – everything – communicate to the prospect that we fervently believe we’re offering something of value. Many times the prospect will buy not because of their belief in the product, goods or service, but because of the belief of the salesperson.

Our feelings are transferable. Courage can be and frequently is transferred to the other person. Convictions are the same. The teacher who fervently believes in the message he or she delivers will persuade the student by the very depth of that conviction. One of my favorite Mary Kay Ash quotes is, “Many people have gone a lot farther than they thought they could because someone else thought they could.” In short, their confidence, born of someone else’s conviction, had enabled them to “make it.” Conviction comes from knowledge and a “feeling” that what we’re teaching, doing, selling, etc., is absolutely right. When we transfer that conviction to those in our sphere of influence, they and society benefit.

Show me a person with deep convictions and I’ll show you a person who’s made a commitment to deliver those convictions to others. Show me a great leader and I’ll show you a person of deep convictions who is able to attract followers because of those convictions. I’ll also show you a person who is happy in what they’re doing and far more successful than those who do not have those convictions. Buy that idea; develop those convictions; make that commitment and I’ll SEE YOU AT THE TOP!

On Integrity

Integrity is: Doing what you said you would do, when you said you would do it, and how you said you would do it. –Byrd Baggett

Always believe what a person does, not what he says. –Fred Smith

One of the primary rules of navigation is this: What’s under the surface should carry more weight than what’s above the surface if the ship is going to make it through storms without capsizing. That’s exactly how it is with integrity. What’s under the surface had better be greater than what you’re showing to the world, or you’re never going to make it through the storms of life. –Pat Williams

Wisdom is knowing the right path to take … Integrity is taking it. –MH McKee

People of integrity expect to be believed. They also know time will prove them right and are willing to wait. –Ann Landers

Watch what direction the feet point, when the mouth stops. You want a consistency between mouth and movement. –James Dignam

Integrity is keeping my commitment even if the circumstances when I made the commitment have changed. –David Jeremiah

Personal integrity is important, not because it gets us what we want, but because it helps us be what we want. –Michael Josephson

A man of character will make himself worthy of any position he is given. –Mahatma Gandhi

Integrity without knowledge is weak and useless, and knowledge without integrity is dangerous and dreadful. –Samuel Johnson

Real integrity is doing the right thing, knowing that nobody’s going to know whether you did it or not. –Oprah Winfrey

The time is always right to do what is right. -Martin Luther King, Jr.

Integrity is not a 90% thing, not a 95% thing; either you have it or you don’t. –Peter Scotese

Integrity has no need of rules. –Albert Camus

In order to be a leader a man must have followers. And to have followers, a man must have their confidence. Hence the supreme quality for a leader is unquestionably integrity. Without it, no real success is possible, no matter whether it is on a section gang, a football field, in an army, or in an office. If a man’s associates find him guilty of phoniness, if they find that he lacks forthright integrity, he will fail. His teachings and actions must square with each other. –Dwight D Eisenhower

Where are we going?

Generally, people who get on a bus know where they want to go. That is why they choose a particular bus that, if it doesn’t change its course, will take them to their destination. It is the same when you get into your car –you normally know your destiny, your direction. You check if you have enough gas to get there, and if you have all the required documents. In addition, if the travel implies crossing the border, there are some required documents and some extra money that you will need. If someone is on a trip, and doesn’t even know where he is going, it is probable that he has been abducted.

I think that, in these last years, citizens, and especially those who work in the public sector, we have found ourselves wandering aimlessly. In other words, we don’t have a clear course as a country. This problem starts from the top, from the very boss: the State. We don’t have a State Policy, so we don’t have a statesman –or the other way around: we don’t have a statesman, so we don’t have a State Policy ¿What course are we taking as a country, as a department, as a city?

This is a very tangible evidence that leadership needs to be reformulated in our country. And we as citizens can not only collaborate by giving our votes every once in a while, but we need to be constructive and critic guardians who watch what is happening with our leaders. There is a growing discomfort, very healthy by the way, among the people who want to be candidates for a leadership position. Many aspects of their life go public. We don’t choose them because of their names, but for what they are capable of doing or achieving from their leadership positions.

Knowing the Vision and the Mission of a company or institution is very important to know as employees where we are going. The same should happen in the State and all of its premises. This way, it won’t matter what the name of the person in charge is. They will have to do what is established.

In the meantime, we are in a trip without destination. Any wind can be good or bad, depending on every one’s expectations.

Thank God we have many examples. One of these is he, the one who came to earth to show us, with humility and sacrifice, that he came so that we could have life, and have it abundantly (Jesus) This trip does have a leader who keeps his word, and a secure destination: eternal life. Let us start from the most important and safe thing: believing in him. He will not disappoint us. And with his help, we will undertake the challenges involved in developing a healthy leadership for our beloved Paraguay.
