Where are we going?

Generally, people who get on a bus know where they want to go. That is why they choose a particular bus that, if it doesn’t change its course, will take them to their destination. It is the same when you get into your car –you normally know your destiny, your direction. You check if you have enough gas to get there, and if you have all the required documents. In addition, if the travel implies crossing the border, there are some required documents and some extra money that you will need. If someone is on a trip, and doesn’t even know where he is going, it is probable that he has been abducted.

I think that, in these last years, citizens, and especially those who work in the public sector, we have found ourselves wandering aimlessly. In other words, we don’t have a clear course as a country. This problem starts from the top, from the very boss: the State. We don’t have a State Policy, so we don’t have a statesman –or the other way around: we don’t have a statesman, so we don’t have a State Policy ¿What course are we taking as a country, as a department, as a city?

This is a very tangible evidence that leadership needs to be reformulated in our country. And we as citizens can not only collaborate by giving our votes every once in a while, but we need to be constructive and critic guardians who watch what is happening with our leaders. There is a growing discomfort, very healthy by the way, among the people who want to be candidates for a leadership position. Many aspects of their life go public. We don’t choose them because of their names, but for what they are capable of doing or achieving from their leadership positions.

Knowing the Vision and the Mission of a company or institution is very important to know as employees where we are going. The same should happen in the State and all of its premises. This way, it won’t matter what the name of the person in charge is. They will have to do what is established.

In the meantime, we are in a trip without destination. Any wind can be good or bad, depending on every one’s expectations.

Thank God we have many examples. One of these is he, the one who came to earth to show us, with humility and sacrifice, that he came so that we could have life, and have it abundantly (Jesus) This trip does have a leader who keeps his word, and a secure destination: eternal life. Let us start from the most important and safe thing: believing in him. He will not disappoint us. And with his help, we will undertake the challenges involved in developing a healthy leadership for our beloved Paraguay.

¿Adónde vamos?

Mayormente, los pasajeros que suben al colectivo saben adonde quieren ir. Por eso eligen tal o cual línea de colectivo, que – si no se desvía de su trayectoria normal – los llevará adonde necesitan irse. Parecida es la situación cuando uno sube al auto, normalmente lo hace sabiendo el destino, la dirección. Se revisa si hay suficiente combustible para llegar a tal lugar y si llevo la documentación correspondiente. Inclusive, si el viaje implica cruzar la frontera, hay algunas exigencias de documentación y de disponibilidad de dinero adicionales. Si alguien va forzado a un viaje, y no sabe ni siquiera adonde va, posiblemente se trate de un secuestro.

En los últimos años me parece que estamos como ciudadanía, y especialmente en el sector del funcionariado público ante una situación parecida: sin rumbo. En otras palabras, no tenemos un rumbo claro como país. Este problema empieza desde arriba, desde el mismo patrón: el Estado. No tenemos una política de estado, por lo cual no tenemos estadista – o al revés – al no tener estadista, no tenemos política de Estado. ¿Cuál es el rumbo, el destino al cual vamos, como país, en el ministerio, en la municipalidad?

Esta es una muestra palpable de que el liderazgo necesita ser reformulado en nuestro país, y los ciudadanos no solo valemos por el voto que depositamos cada tanto, sino que necesitamos ser custodios críticos y constructivos de lo que sucede con nuestros líderes. Existe una creciente inquietud, muy saludable por cierto, de que las personas que desean postularse a cualquier cargo de liderazgo, deben darse a conocer en muchas facetas de su vida. No los elegimos por su nombre y apellido, sino por lo que supuestamente son capaces de hacer o generar desde el liderazgo.

Conocer la Visión y Misión de una empresa o institución es muy importante para que todos los funcionarios sepan adónde vamos. Lo mismo debería suceder en el Estado y todas sus dependencias. De esa manera, inclusive no tendrá demasiado importancia cual es el nombre y apellido de los que ocupan los cargos de liderazgo; tendrán que hacer lo que se establece.

Mientras tanto, parece que estamos en un viaje sin norte. Por lo tanto, cualquier viento puede ser bueno, o malo; conforme a las expectativas de cada uno.

Gracias a Dios, tenemos ejemplos diferentes; como el de Aquel que vino a la tierra para mostrarnos con humildad y sacrificio que El vino, para que tengamos Vida, y Vida en Abundancia (Jesús). Ese viaje sí tiene un Líder que cumple, y un destino seguro: la Vida Eterna. Empecemos por lo más importante, y lo más seguro: creer en El. No nos defraudará. Y con su ayuda, emprenderemos los otros desafíos de formar Liderazgo Saludable para nuestro querido Paraguay.
